The Indian Cricket Team continued their winning run as they thrashed South Africa by 243 runs in their eighth World Cup match to be played at Eden Gardens, Kolkata on 5th November 2023. It was a dominating performance right from the word go putting pressure.
Mohammed Siraj got the initial breakthrough dismissing dangerous Quinton de Kock taking inside edge onto the stumps. The Indian bowlers kept tight lines and lengths not allowing the South African batters to score runs. Ravindra Jadeja produced a peach to dismiss Temba Bavuma.
Shami got the wicket of Aiden Markram in his first over to leave South Africa in trouble. Jadeja then dismissed Klassen with a review for LBW. The umpires gave not out but on review, it was overturned to out. It was another brilliant piece of bowling by Shami getting rid of Dussen with another successive review. Ravindra Jadeja produced another beauty to get rid of Keshav Maharaj. Kuldeep Yadav dismissed Marco Jansen with a simple catch. Jadeja then took a sharp return catch getting rid of Kagiso Rabada. Kuldeep finished off by getting rid of Ngidi to bowl out South Africa for just 83 in 27.1 overs.
Indian captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and decided to bat first. Rohit Sharma looked in sublime touch putting the South African bowlers under immense pressure. Shubman Gill showed his class making life tough for Proteas. Rohit Sharma’s brilliant innings ended with a good catch by Bavuma at mid-off. Rohit and Gill added 62 runs in 35 deliveries laying a strong foundation for a big total.
At the end of the first 10 overs, India raced away to 91 for 1. Keshav Maharaj bowled a peach to dismiss Gill. Gill and Kohli added 31 runs for the 2nd wicket. Shreyas Iyer struggled against the disciplined bowling of Maharaj. Kohli and Shreyas Iyer kept strike rotating before taking the attack to South African pace bowlers.
Kohli completed his fifty off 67 deliveries while Shreyas Iyer also reached half-century off 64 balls to keep the momentum going for India. Iyer’s brilliant innings ended with a good catch by Markram. Kohli and Iyer added 134 runs for the 3rd wicket. Suryakumar Yadav showed intent putting pressure on the South African bowling.
It was a superb batting display by Surya putting on valuable runs. Surya and Kohli added 36 runs for the 5th wicket. Ravindra Jadeja took singles before Kohli completed his 49th century off 119 deliveries. Jadeja hit some big shots in the last over as India posted 326 for 5 in 50 overs. Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja added 41 runs for the 6th wicket.
