The England Cricket Team suffered a humiliating 8-wicket loss to Sri Lanka at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru on 26th October 2023. It has been a disappointing World Cup so far for the defending Champions England with only 1 win and 4 losses.
England began the tournament with a 9-wicket loss to New Zealand at Ahmedabad. They registered a comfortable victory over Bangladesh at Dharmshala getting their campaign back on track. Jos Buttler and Co suffered shocking loss to Afghanistan by 69 runs at Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi.
It was another disappointing performance by Jos Buttler and Co. against South Africa at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. The England bowlers looked out of sorts as they conceded 399 for 5 and bowled out for 170 to lose by 229 runs.
England captain Jos Buttler won the toss and decided to bat first. Malan and Bairstow gave a decent start putting on 45 runs for the opening wicket before wickets fell at regular intervals. Ben Stokes struggled with his strokes but was eventually dismissed for 43. The defending Champions were bowled out for 156 in 33.2 overs. Despite picking 2 early wickets, England bowlers could not pick wickets and lost the match by a massive margin.
“It’s incredibly tough. As a captain, you feel that a lot – disappointed with me and the boys that we’ve not shown our best. We’re playing a long way short of our best. There’s a lot of experienced cricketers in the room. You don’t become a bad team overnight. That’s the frustration.”
England must win all their four remaining games in the tournament. They are currently in 9th place with only 1 win and 4 losses. The defending Champions England would play India in their next match at Lucknow on 29th October.
After this match, they would play Australia at Ahmedabad on the 4th of November, followed by Netherlands on the 8th, and the final match will see England take on Pakistan on the 11th of November.
