India’s captain, Rohit Sharma, is aiming to set new records in the upcoming ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023. Their campaign kicks off against Australia on October 8, with the goal of securing their third World Cup title, the second on their home turf. During the cricketing spectacle in India over the next two months, Rohit has the opportunity to challenge several records, including Sachin Tendulkar’s World Cup centuries record and Chris Gayle’s six-hitting record.

Rohit Sharma aims to surpass Sachin Tendulkar’s record for the most centuries in ODI World Cups. Currently, Rohit and Tendulkar share the record with six centuries each in 17 World Cup matches. Rohit achieved five centuries in the 2019 World Cup in England and hopes to continue that performance in India.

Here are the feats Rohit Sharma can achieve:

The fourth Indian to reach 1,000 World Cup runs

The 36-year-old cricketer has the potential to be the fourth Indian to achieve over 1,000 runs in ODI World Cups. Currently, Rohit has amassed 978 runs in 17 matches, maintaining an impressive average of 65.20 and a striking rate of 95.97.

Scoring an additional 22 runs would place him alongside Indian greats like Sachin Tendulkar (2,278), Virat Kohli (1,030), and Sourav Ganguly (1,006) in the exclusive club of players with over 1,000 runs in World Cups.

Rohit Sharma is approaching the breaking of legendary West Indies batsman Chris Gayle’s record for the most sixes in international cricket. Rohit has smashed 551 sixes in 451 matches, coming just three short of Gayle’s record of 553 sixes.

The fifth Indian to achieve 18,000 international runs

Rohit Sharma has accumulated 17,642 runs in 451 matches across formats, needing only 352 more runs in the World Cup to join the elite list that includes Sachin Tendulkar (34,357), Virat Kohli (25,767), Rahul Dravid (24,064), and Sourav Ganguly (18,433).

The sixth Indian to attain 100 international half-centuries

Rohit Sharma requires only three additional half-centuries to join the exclusive club of six Indian batters with 100 half-centuries in international cricket. His current tally includes 16 in Tests, 52 in ODIs, and 29 in T20Is. The elite group of Indian players with over 100 half-centuries comprises Sachin Tendulkar (164), Rahul Dravid (145), Virat Kohli (132), MS Dhoni (108), and Sourav Ganguly (106).
