Indian opener Shubman Gill is set to miss Team India’s ICC ODI Cricket World Cup 2023 fixture against Afghanistan. He also missed the opening game and will continue to be absent from the team lineup for their second match on Wednesday, October 11 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, as he remains under medical supervision.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India shared an update on Shubman Gill ahead of the second World Cup match. The youngster has tested positive for dengue and is in recovery. He will not travel with the rest of the Indian squad to Delhi for the second game. He will stay back in Chennai and will be under the supervision of the medical team.
“Team India batter Shubman Gill will not be travelling with the team to Delhi on 9th October 2023. The opening batter who missed the team’s first fixture in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 against Australia in Chennai is set to miss the team’s next fixture against Afghanistan in Delhi on the 11th of October,” wrote the BCCI in their statement.
Team India kicks off ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 campaign with a win
Team India defeated Australia by six wickets to kick off their ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 campaign. They chased down 200 runs on Sunday, October 8 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. KL Rahul won the Player of the Match award for his unbeaten 97 runs. The wicket-keeper batter slammed eight boundaries and two sixes. Virat Kohli also played a gritty knock of 85 runs, including six boundaries.
Earlier in the match, Ravindra Jadeja took three wickets as Australia got all out for 199 runs. Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja took two wickets each in the innings. Steve Smith was the highest scorer for Australia with 46 runs off 71 deliveries, with five boundaries. India will take on Afghanistan in their second match on Wednesday, October 11 in Delhi.
