India’s current opening batsman, Shubman Gill, made his way to Ahmedabad on Wednesday, October 11, in anticipation of the highly-awaited 2023 World Cup showdown against Pakistan, scheduled for this Saturday, October 14, at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
Gill was absent from the Indian team’s previous World Cup matches due to dengue fever. He has been in recovery since last week and had a brief hospital stay in Chennai as a precautionary measure. Consequently, Gill did not accompany the Indian squad to Delhi for their recent match against Afghanistan.
In a positive turn of events, he was recently seen arriving in Ahmedabad, where India’s next match in the tournament is set to take place. A fan offered a sneak peek of Shubman Gill by sharing a video on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

The unavailability of Shubman Gill has significantly impacted Team India’s top batting order
Shubman Gill has displayed exceptional form in ODI cricket throughout 2023, solidifying his position as an opener alongside Rohit Sharma through impactful performances. In the 20 ODIs played this year, Gill has amassed an impressive 1230 runs at an average of 72.35, which includes five centuries. He currently holds the second position in the ICC ODI batting rankings, just behind Babar Azam.
Prior to the World Cup, many experts had predicted Gill to be the top run-scorer in the tournament. Unfortunately, he was unable to participate in the World Cup due to dengue fever, with Ishan Kishan taking his place in the Indian playing XI for both matches so far.
We eagerly await an update regarding his availability for the India versus Pakistan game in the coming days.
