New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson is looking forward to his comeback to the team for the 2023 ICC ODI World Cup. He was out of action for several weeks due to a knee injury and will be returning to the team for the mega-event. He expressed that he wants to put his knee to the test during the warm-up matches.

Kane Williamson injured his knee during the 2023 Indian Premier League earlier this year. He underwent surgery to begin the recovery process. Following the surgery, he has made progress and wants to test the fitness of the knee during the two warm-up matches leading into the World Cup.

“There is a strong desire to be involved as much as I can. Basically, it’s just wanting to progress what I am doing now – the running, the fielding, time in the middle with the bat. Although it’s going well, you still have days that vary a little bit. So it’s working through those warm-up games to get as much out of it as I can, and as a team, without bothering it too much. Although the load is going to keep increasing, there is a little bit of an unknown. But it has felt pretty good really in the last few weeks,” said Kane Williamson as quoted by Cricbuzz.

We will definitely consider some of that: Kane Williamson on changing his field position

New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson also revealed that the team will consider changing his fielding position so that the knee doesn’t get overworked. He expressed that it would be suitable for him to field square of the wicket or at the slips, as per the team’s requirement. Kane Williamson said,

“We will definitely consider some of that. Where I field is usually at mid-off, which will probably remain the case. Probably slightly better suited to it than the square of the wicket. Potentially some slip, but I won’t be standing there if we don’t require one.”

New Zealand will take on Pakistan on Friday, September 29 in their first warm-up match of the 2023 ICC ODI World Cup at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. They will also play a warm-up match against South Africa on Monday, October 2 in Thiruvananthapuram leading into the tournament.
