In his debut T20 World Cup match, Frank Nsubuga of Uganda made a historic mark by delivering the most economical spell in the tournament’s history. The offspinner achieved remarkable figures of 2/4 from his four overs, playing a pivotal role in Uganda’s bowling attack, which restricted Papua New Guinea (PNG) to a total of 77 runs in 19.1 overs during a Group C match of the 2024 T20 World Cup.
Nsubuga was introduced into the attack in the 9th over, conceding only two runs in his first over. He made an immediate impact in his second over by dismissing Charles Amini for 5 runs with his second delivery, completing a wicket-maiden over.
He continued his excellent form in the following over, another wicket-maiden, by trapping Hiri Hiri LBW for 15 runs. Nsubuga wrapped up his spell with a final over that conceded just two runs, thus setting a new record for the most economical spell in T20 World Cup history.
Nsubuga said: “My first big tournament, first world cup and to finish with figures of 2/4, I’m still pinching myself, You just enjoy yourself, you never know what’s coming for you. I’m looking after the young boys, they’re looking after me, so it’s been good understanding within the team that’s helping us.”
He further added: “The ball wasn’t coming on and I bowled on the slower side. We needed to bowl wicket-to-wicket.”
At 43 years old, Nsubuga became the second oldest player to participate in a T20 World Cup match, adding another layer of significance to his performance.
This was Uganda’s first appearance in a T20 World Cup, and despite Nsubuga’s outstanding effort, their campaign began with a challenging match against former champions Australia, where they suffered a 125-run defeat. Nonetheless, Nsubuga’s individual brilliance stood out as a highlight for Uganda in the tournament.
