Canada stunned Ireland in a low-scoring encounter to register their maiden win in T20 World Cups played at Nassau Cricket County Stadium, New York on 7th June 2024. Ireland captain Paul Stirling won the toss and decided to field first. It was a superb start by Ireland bowlers as Craig Young and Mark Adair struck early getting the wickets of Navneet Dhaliwal and Aaron Johnson. At the end of the first six overs, Canada made 37 for 2.

Canada lost two more quick wickets of Pargat Singh and Dilpreet Bajwa leaving them in big trouble. Nicholas Kirton and Shreyas Mova steadied the ship for Canada taking singles and keeping the strike rotating with lovely shots that kept momentum going. Kirton’s superb knock ended up being caught by Balbirnie.

Kirton and Shreyas Mova added 75 runs for the 5th wicket. It was a superb bowling effort by Ireland bowlers as Canada made 137 for 7 in 20 overs. Craig Young and Barry McCarthy took 2 wickets each while Mark Adair and Gareth Delany took 1 wicket each.

It was a cautious start by Paul Stirling and Balbirnie against disciplined Canada bowling. Jeremy Gordan struck to dismiss Ireland captain Stirling. At the end of the first six overs, Ireland made 31 for 1. Junaid Siddiqui took a superb return catch to dismiss Balbirnie leaving Ireland in trouble. A superb piece of fielding resulted in the run out of Lorcan Tucker.

Canada captain Saad Bin Zafar shattered the stumps of Harry Tector to leave Ireland in trouble. Heyliger produced peach to dismiss Curtis Campher in deep trouble. George Dockrell and Mark Adair put on an excellent display of hitting with the required run rate climbing.

The match went right down the wire with 17 runs required off the final over. Heyliger dismissed Mark Adair as he took a good catch by him. Mark Adair and Dockrell added 68 runs for the 7th wicket. Heyliger held onto his nerves to win the match by 12 runs.

Canada playing their debut T20 World Cup registered their first win of this prestigious tournament against the fancied Ireland side.  For 49 off 35 balls, Nicholas Kirton was named the player of the match award.
