One of the finest all-rounders, David Wiese announced retirement from international cricket after the final league match against England of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 played in Antigua and Barbuda on 15th June.
The match was reduced to 11 overs a side due to rain. After a little there was rain, and it was curtailed again. Wiese bowled a superb spell giving away just 6 runs in his 2 overs. He dismissed Phil Salt before Harry Brook and Jonny Bairstow played attacking cricket to post 122 for 5 in 10 overs.
Chasing a revised target of 126 in 10 overs, David Wiese came at number 3 with a quickfire 27 off 12 balls with 2 boundaries and 2 sixes but Namibia fell short of the target via DLS method by 41 runs. After his innings, Wiese raised his helmet and was given a guard of honor by captain Gerald Erasmus.
Namibia registered only 1 victory in the group stage winning against Oman in Super Over. They were hammered by Scotland, Australia, and England to be knocked out of the Group stage.
“Obviously, I [would] still like to play the game for a couple more years, I feel like I’ve still got a lot to contribute and a lot to play,” he said. “But I just feel like what better place to end a special career for me with Namibia. I’ve had a lot of good times with them and to play my last game for them possibly at a World Cup against a world-class team like England, it just seemed like the right time.”
“Massive impact, in terms of the level of cricket he brought to our circle. He’s a great guy on the field in terms of performance but off the field, he is someone we have learned a lot from and he’s inspired us to new heights and greater heights,” Erasmus said.
