The hosts West Indies registered an emphatic 104-run win over Afghanistan in the final league game of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 played at Darren Sammy Stadium, St Lucia on 18th June.

Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan won the toss and decided to bat first. After the early dismissal of Brandon King by Omarzai, Nicolas Pooran showed intent right from word go putting enough pressure on Afghanistan bowlers along with Johnson Charles. Pooran joined the list of elite batters smashing 36 runs in an over. He took the attack to Omarzai in the 4th over with 27 runs from the bat while 9 from extras. West Indies raced away to 92 for 1 in the first six overs.

Pooran looked in sublime touch with some lusty hitting keeping the scoreboard ticking and not allowing Afghanistan bowlers to settle. Pooran smashed fifty off 31 deliveries. Johnson Charles and Pooran added 80 runs for the 2nd wicket. Shai Hope contributed some valuable runs keeping the scoreboard ticking. Pooran maintained the pressure on Afg bowling.

West Indies captain Rovman Powell came to the crease and provided great support to Pooran. Powell and Pooran added 64 runs for the 4th wicket. Pooran was dismissed for 98 with 2 balls remaining. It was a superb batting display by West Indies as they posted 218 for 5 in 20 overs.

It was a superb bowling performance by West Indies bowlers as they kept picking wickets at regular intervals and never allowed Afghanistan batters to score runs easily. Obed McCoy playing his first match took 3 for 14. Gudakesh Motie and Akeal Hossein took 2 wickets each while Russell and Alazzari Joseph took 1 wicket each. For his 98, Nicolas Pooran was named the player of the match award.

List of Batters To Hit 36 Runs in T20I Format

Nicolas Pooran joined the list of batters to hit 36 runs in an over. Yuvraj Singh was the first batter in international cricket to hit 36 runs during the first edition of the T20 World Cup against England in Durban in 2007.

Kieron Pollard hit 36 runs against Akila Dananjaya at Coolidge in 2021. Rohit Sharma and Rinku Singh smashed Karim Janat in Bengaluru in 2024. Dipendra Singh Airee hit 36 runs against Kamran Khan of Qatar in Al Amerat in 2024.
