The Event Technical Committee of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 has sanctioned Hazratullah Zazai as a replacement for Mujeeb ur Rahman in the Afghanistan squad. Mujeeb was forced to withdraw from the tournament due to an injury to his right index finger. The substitution of any player in the squad necessitates the approval of the Event Technical Committee to make the change official.
Hazratullah Zazai, who has experience with 43 T20 Internationals, steps in to fill the vacancy left by Mujeeb’s unfortunate injury. The protocol for player replacements at the World Cup ensures that any changes to the team roster receive formal endorsement from the Event Technical Committee, thereby ensuring the integrity of the squad’s composition.
In the meantime, the Afghanistan team is enjoying a remarkable run in the T20 World Cup 2024. They have secured a spot in the Super 8 stage following their convincing seven-wicket victory over Papua New Guinea. Afghanistan remains undefeated in their group, sharing this record with the West Indies. As they look forward to the Super 8 phase, they have one remaining match to complete in the group stage.
This outstanding performance has highlighted Afghanistan’s strength and potential in the tournament.
Rashid Khan said: “Feeling great to qualify for the next round. This is the first time for Afghanistan has been in the Super Eight in T20Is. The boys have done well, adjusting to the conditions very quickly and that is something very pleasing for me.”
“It is very important to have someone like him (Farooqi), and it helps you later as well if you get a couple of wickets. The more you attack when there is help for you, the better it is for you. Even if the batter is attacking, you have to attack as well. We are lucky to have him on our side. (On Afghanistan’s middle order) We are happy with the way the openers played in the first two games.”
