The International Cricket Council named the test team of the year for 2023. This team includes the spin duo of Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin with great performances in Test cricket last year.
It includes five Australian players namely Usman Khawaja, Travis Head, and Alex Carey. Pat Cummins has been named as the captain while Mitchell Starc also has been included in the squad. Usman Khawaja occupies the top spot being the leading run-getter in Test matches last year with 1210 runs from 13 matches (24 innings) including 3 centuries and 6 half-centuries. His best score in Test matches last year was 195 not out against South Africa in Sydney.
Former Sri Lanka test captain Dimuth Karaunate proved his worth with 608 runs from 6 matches (10 innings) including 2 centuries and 3 half-centuries. During 2023, his best score was 179 against Ireland.
Kane Williamson holds the number 3 spot with 695 runs from 7 matches (13 innings) with 4 centuries including the best score of 215 against Sri Lanka. Joe Root also had a brilliant run in Test matches last year with 787 runs from 8 matches (14 innings) including 2 centuries and 5 half-centuries to his name. His best score was 153 not out against New Zealand.
Travis Head also played a key role in helping Australia win the ICC World Test Championship 2023 at Oval. He scored 919 runs from 12 matches (23 innings) including 1 century and 5 half-centuries with the best score of 163 in the finals of WTC against India.
Ravindra Jadeja did well with both bat and ball during 2023. He scored 281 runs from 7 matches (9 innings) including 2 half-centuries that included the best score of 70 against Australia. He took 33 wickets with the ball from 7 matches (14 innings) at an economy of 2.39 runs per over including best figures of 7 for 42 against Australia.
Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey also showed his class with 461 runs from 13 matches (20 innings) with 3 half-centuries including the best score of 66 not out against England.
Australian premier pace bowler Pat Cummins has been appointed the captain for tests in 2023. Under his captaincy, Australia retained the Ashes despite the series being drawn at 2-2 and then helped them to win the WTC finals against India. He grabbed a total of 42 wickets from 11 matches (19 innings) at an economy of 3.60 runs per over with best figures of 6 for 91 in the 3rd Ashes Test match against England.
India’s ace off spinner also proved his worth picking up 41 wickets from 7 matches (13 innings) at an economy of 2.53 including best figures of 7 for 71 against West Indies.
Mitchell Starc was a part of the winning team that lifted the WTC 2023 defeating India. He grabbed 38 wickets from 9 matches (16 innings) at an economy of 4.44 runs per over with best figures of 5 for 78 against England.
Retired England pace bowler Stuart Broad completed the XI. He grabbed a total of 38 wickets from 8 matches (16 innings) at an economy of 3.49 runs per over with 3 four-wicket hauls and 1 five-wicket haul. His best figures in Test matches last year was 5 for 51 against Ireland.
