MS Dhoni, the legendary former captain of the Indian cricket team, spoke about his stance on social media and public relations. Despite being a global sports icon, Dhoni has kept a low profile on online platforms.
He revealed that his managers often encouraged him to use social media for promotion, but Dhoni firmly believed that his cricket performance should be the main focus. Having debuted in 2004, Dhoni saw the rise of platforms like Twitter and Instagram, yet he always felt that playing well eliminated the need for extra PR.
His approach reflects his values of simplicity and focus, emphasizing that the game itself is more important than online fame. Dhoni’s outlook resonates with fans who admire his grounded nature.
“I have never been a big fan of social media. Throughout, I have had so many managers and all of them keep pushing. I started playing in 2004; Twitter got popular later on, after which Instagram came in.”
“All the managers told me, ‘you should do some PR, build this and build that’. I had the same answer that if you play good cricket, you don’t need PR,” Dhoni said on Eurogrip Tred Talks.
MS Dhoni’s illustrious career
Dhoni was dismissed for a duck in his debut ODI against Bangladesh, but he quickly rose to prominence. In 2007, he led India to victory in the first-ever Men’s T20 World Cup, followed by the 2011 ODI World Cup win. In 2013, under his captaincy, India claimed the Champions Trophy.
Dhoni retired from Test cricket after the Melbourne Test in 2014. In August 2020, he announced his retirement from all forms of international cricket. In 2025, Dhoni will play in his 18th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
In October 2024, CSK retained Dhoni as an uncapped player for IPL 2025. This decision was facilitated by a rule allowing players who haven’t represented their country in international cricket for five years to be considered uncapped. Dhoni hasn’t played for India since the 2019 ODI World Cup.
Ahead of the 2025 season, Dhoni has emphasized the importance of fitness. He engages in various sports, including tennis, badminton, and football, to maintain his physical condition. He believes that regular participation in these activities is the best way to sustain an active lifestyle.
