Discussing their relationship in detail, India’s new head coach, Gautam Gambhir, mentioned that they share ‘a very good bond.’ For the Sri Lanka tour, India has called Kohli into the ODI squad, although the latter has announced his T20I retirement.

In the current IPL, the two Delhiites have barbed words for each other on the field. It was during Indian cricketer Gambhir’s leadership of the Kolkata Knight Riders in 2013 that both competitively faced each other.

Later, in the next year’s Indian Premier League, Kohli, Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s team member, and Gambhir, the Lucknow Super Giants’ coach, were caught chasing one another. Nevertheless, both players were seen embracing each other when KKR and RCB faced each other in the group stage the subsequent year.

“I’ve had a lot of chats with him”- Gautam Gambhir

Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir, who is said to be one of the best cricketers ever to have played for India, have a strong friendship. Kohli was praised by the older cricketer as a “world-class batsman” and a “complete professional.” Speaking on their teammates in Indian cricket Gautam Gambhir is so excited about partnering with Virat Kohli.

“Good for the TRP, but my relationship is not public. What kind of relationship do I share with Virat Kohli? I think it’s between two mature individuals. On the field, everyone has the right to fight for their jersey and come back to a winning dressing room,” Gautam Gambhir said.

“But at the moment, we’re representing India, representing 140 crore Indians and I’m sure we’re going to be on the same page and try to make India proud. I share a very good relationship off the field and will continue to do that. But yes, to make it more public, what kind of relationship… I think it’s between two individuals,” Gautam Gambhir added.

“I have had a lot of chats with him, but sometimes. We shared messages. It’s not important what we discussed after my announcement or before my announcement. Just because we want headlines. He is a thorough professional, he is a world-class player. Hopefully, we can work together really well. Our job is to make the country proud together. We represent more than a billion people. We have got to be on the same page,” Gambhir said in a press conference.

The three-match T20I series and the ODI series are scheduled to begin India’s tour of Sri Lanka on June 27.
