‘In A Big Tournament, At The Big Stage…’ – Sourav Ganguly Comments On Rohit Sharma’s Concerning Form

Sourav Ganguly is hopeful that Rohit Sharma will regain his form for India at the T20 World Cup. With only 21 days left before India’s T20 World Cup campaign, Rohit Sharma’s form is causing concern. The India captain, currently struggling while playing for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2024, is far from his usual self.

Despite starting the season strongly with a century against Chennai Super Kings, Rohit has only scored 349 runs at an average of 29.08, with recent disappointing scores of 6, 8, 4, 11, 4, and 19.

The atmosphere in the MI dressing room is tense, and Rohit’s batting is a shadow of its former glory. With just three weeks to go, the India skipper urgently needs to find some runs to regain his form and confidence.

The T20 World Cup, commencing on June 2 in the West Indies and the United States, marks Rohit’s ninth appearance in the tournament. However, if his form doesn’t improve, it could be his worst performance statistically.

Rohit has accumulated 963 runs from 39 matches in the T20 World Cup, but he needs to deliver his best for India to break their ICC trophy drought. Few believe Rohit will regain his form in time for the World Cup, with Sourav Ganguly, who persuaded Rohit to accept India’s captaincy after Virat Kohli, being one of the optimists.

“India is a very good team. Rohit will play well in the World Cup. He plays well in big tournaments. At the big stage, he will be fine,” Ganguly said at Pravin Amre’s book launch in the capital on Tuesday.

Rohit’s performance in the first four T20 World Cups was average, with scores of 88, 131, 84, and 82 respectively. After being promoted to opener, he scored 200 runs in the 2014 World T20, where India finished as runners-up.

However, two years later, he had a disappointing T20 World Cup campaign at home as India lost to West Indies in the semifinal. In 2021 and 2022, Rohit scored 174 and 116 runs respectively, but was still not at his best.

With one last chance at World Cup glory, Rohit and the entire Indian cricket community are hoping he can rediscover his form.

Pant’s Absence Was Felt: Ganguly on DC Captain’s Match Ban

Turning to the Delhi Capitals, Ganguly lamented Rishabh Pant’s absence in their game against Royal Challengers Bengaluru on Sunday. The Capitals captain was suspended for one match, and his absence was noticeable, with stand-in captain Axar Patel appearing less tactically adept.

However, Pant will return for the Capitals’ crucial final game against Lucknow Super Giants at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Tuesday, as the team strives to remain in contention for the IPL 2024 Playoffs.

“Yesterday, yes (if DC lost because of Pant’s absence), Rishabh makes a big difference to our batting,” added Ganguly, DC’s director of cricket.

With 12 points from 13 matches, DC currently sit in sixth place on the points table. A loss to LSG tonight would likely end their hopes of winning the trophy.
