Rohit Sharma intervened just in time to prevent Sarfaraz Khan from making a potentially disastrous decision during Day 3 of the 4th Test against England in Ranchi, fulfilling his promise to the youngster’s father in the process. With India on the brink of victory, Rohit, with spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja operating, realized the need for a close-in fielder and instructed Sarfaraz, stationed at long-on, to move to shot leg. However, Sarfaraz, eager to comply, decided to do so without wearing a helmet, risking injury.
In the 47th over, as Kuldeep awaited to bowl the fourth ball, Sarfaraz opted to field close without a helmet, citing time constraints. Rohit, sensing the danger, promptly cautioned him about the risks involved. Umpire Kumar Dharmasena also intervened, affirming the necessity of wearing a helmet in such positions. Fortunately, Rohit’s intervention prevented disaster, as only two balls later, a defensive shot from Bashir struck Sarfaraz on the helmet.

Karthik said: “You could hear Rohit saying ‘Oye, hero nahi banne ka’. Very Rohit Sharma style to say it. Not the usual way here. No need to be a hero, wait for your helmet here. When you’re fielding at that position, no risks please. Get that helmet on. Even the umpire letting Sarfaraz know that,”
Despite Sarfaraz’s earlier sharp fielding, including two catches, his decision to field without protection was deemed a lapse in judgment. Rohit’s timely intervention resonated with his promise to Sarfaraz’s father, Naushad, to take care of his son. Rohit’s actions were a reminder of the tragic incident in 1998 when Indian cricketer Raman Lamba lost his life after being struck on the head while fielding at short leg without a helmet.
India’s search for the remaining two wickets was successful, with Ashwin, summoned by Rohit, dismissing Foakes and James Anderson in the same over. This marked Ashwin’s 35th five-wicket-haul, matching Anil Kumble’s record in the same number of innings. Ashwin’s 5/51, complemented by Kuldeep Yadav’s 4/22, restricted England to 145 in the second innings, setting India a target of 192.
India’s strong position was further bolstered by a solid opening partnership between Rohit and Yashasvi Jaiswal, who scored briskly. Rohit achieved personal milestones, reaching 4000 Test runs and 1000 against England during the innings. Additionally, Dhruv Jurel’s maiden Test fifty, scoring 90, was instrumental in India’s resurgence from 177/7 to 307, contributing significantly to their commanding position in the match and series.
