Team India batter Tilak Varma failed to make an impact in consecutive innings in the ongoing T20I series against Ireland. He was dismissed cheaply in the second T20I on Sunday, August 20 at the Malahide Cricket Club in Dublin, which Team India won by 33 runs, taking a 2-0 lead in the three-match series. He will be disappointed with his performance in the series so far.

Tilak Varma’s T20I career started on a high in the five-match T20I series against the West Indies earlier this month. He played a blistering knock on his debut, scoring 39 runs off just 22 deliveries. The left-hander followed it up with a fifty and 49 in the next two matches. He finished the series as the leading run-scorer for India, with 173 runs at an average of 57.67.

However, he hasn’t been able to replicate the performance so far in the Ireland series. In the second T20I against Ireland, Tilak Varma was dismissed cheaply for a run by Barry McCarthy. The pacer bowled a short delivery which angled into Tilak Varma, who pulled the ball. However, the ball went up rather than going the distance. George Dockrell, who was at deep square left ran back to his left to take a fine catch.

This was Tilak Varma’s second consecutive dismissal against short delivery. He was dismissed for a golden duck in the first match against a back-of-a-length delivery. However, he was a bit unlucky to get out while glancing the ball down to fine leg.

Tilak Varma has proved his batting prowess in the last few years in domestic as well as International cricket. He has played seven T20Is for India so far, scoring 174 runs at an average of 34.8, and a strike rate of 138.1. His maiden fifty came against West Indies in the five-match T20I series earlier this month.

Owing to his performance, the batter is being considered as a backup for India for the 2023 Asia Cup and the upcoming ODI World Cup. The youngster has struggled a bit against hard lengths and will be keen to work on it. Heading into the final T20I against Ireland, he will be determined to do well and finish the series on a good note.
