The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has taken a decisive step ahead of India’s crucial tour of England. In a bold move, some of India’s top Test cricketers are likely to feature in the India A squad, which will face the England Lions in two four-day matches. This decision aims to provide valuable match practice before the highly anticipated five-Test series against England, beginning on June 20 at Headingley.
BCCI’s Decision to Strengthen India A Squad
With the England series marking the start of the 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle, BCCI wants to ensure that players are fully prepared. Red-ball cricket demands a different skill set compared to white-ball formats, and playing in English conditions requires additional acclimatization.
The inclusion of senior Test players in the India A squad provides them with a platform to regain form and adapt to the English pitches. These matches will be crucial in helping players refine their techniques against the swinging and seaming conditions of the UK.
India’s Test Campaign in England
India’s senior team will begin their Test series against England on June 20 at Headingley, followed by matches at Lord’s, Trent Bridge, The Oval, and Old Trafford. This series will be a crucial test for India’s red-ball specialists.
According to an ECB statement, India A is set to play two four-day matches ahead of the Test series against England. The games are scheduled to take place from May 30 to June 2 at The Spitfire Ground, St Lawrence in Canterbury, and from June 6 to June 9 at the County Ground in Northampton.
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s Expected Inclusion
Reports suggest that some senior Test players struggling with form might be asked to play in these matches to regain their confidence before the main series. Since the IPL playoffs are scheduled for May 20, 21, and 23, and the final on May 25, players selected for India A will have little recovery time before switching to red-ball cricket.
Both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have had a rough patch in Test cricket. Rohit, despite leading India, managed just 164 runs across three recent Test series, while Kohli, despite a century against Australia, struggled with an average of 23.75. If players like Kohli and Rohit are required to join India A, their absence could affect their respective IPL franchises’ chances in the playoffs.
Karun Nair’s Possible Selection
Karun Nair has had an outstanding domestic season, finishing as the leading run-scorer in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and the fourth-highest run-getter in the Ranji Trophy with 863 runs. With a solid first-class record and past experience in England, Nair’s inclusion could bolster India’s batting depth.
By including senior players in the India A squad, young cricketers will gain valuable experience by playing alongside seasoned professionals. This move ensures that all Test-bound players get competitive match practice before facing England.
