Karun Nair has been in scintillating form in the domestic circuit, making him one of the most anticipated batters to watch in IPL 2025. Representing Vidarbha, Nair amassed an impressive 863 runs at an average of 53.93 in the Ranji Trophy, including crucial knocks of 86 and 135 in the final against Kerala, securing Vidarbha’s third title.
His dominance extended to the Vijay Hazare Trophy, where he was named Player of the Tournament after scoring 779 runs, including five centuries. In the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, he continued his stellar form, leading Vidarbha’s charts with 255 runs at a strike rate of 177.08.
Now set to play for Delhi Capitals (DC), Nair aims to translate his domestic success into the IPL. He acknowledges the batting-friendly conditions in Visakhapatnam and Delhi and remains committed to sticking to his strengths. “My focus only is about understanding my game a little more for this tournament and team. Like what I should be doing in my own way, not trying to be someone else,” Nair stated. He also emphasized the need to adapt quickly, saying, “Obviously, you have to keep the strike rates up and play according to the situation, which is really important.”
Reuniting with KL Rahul and Playing Under Axar Patel
Returning to Delhi Capitals brings a sense of nostalgia for Nair, who was part of the franchise in 2015 and 2016 when it was still called Delhi Daredevils. Reflecting on the changes, he humorously remarked, “Just being a little older, I would say, and knowing my game a little more.” Despite the name change, his goal remains the same: contributing to team victories.
One of the exciting aspects of his return to DC is reuniting with childhood friend KL Rahul. “We’ve played cricket since childhood. We started together at the same time and it’ll be good to have him,” Nair shared, expressing his eagerness to learn from Rahul’s preparation and performances.
Nair also had high praise for Axar Patel, who has been appointed DC captain. He believes Axar’s experience and versatility make him a strong leader. “Axar has been around for a long time now, and he is going to be a great captain. He understands everyone’s situation and roles,” Nair commented, looking forward to working under him.
Lessons from Highs and Lows, and the Road Ahead
Despite his recent success, Nair’s journey has been far from smooth. Since IPL 2019, he has played only eight matches across stints with Punjab Kings and Rajasthan Royals. His last appearance for India came in 2017 before a dip in form led him to switch domestic teams from Karnataka to Vidarbha. However, he believes his struggles have only strengthened his resolve. “It’s always about ups and downs and how you come back from those downs and treat the highs. Those times have really helped me,” he reflected.
His viral tweet, where he asked cricket for another chance, resonated with many and even caught the attention of India’s chief selector Ajit Agarkar. As he gears up for IPL 2025, Nair remains focused on his goal. “I want to stay relaxed and just react to whatever situation I’m dealt with. I feel ready and will try to carry this confidence into the IPL.” While his immediate focus is on making an impact for Delhi Capitals, his ambition to don the Indian jersey again remains firm.
