India Announces New Skipper For T20Is

Suryakumar Yadav has been selected as the captain of the men’s T20I team for the tour to Sri Lanka later this month, whereas Shubman Gill has been awarded as the vice-captain of the India T20I and ODI teams.

The 68 T20 international matches experienced middle-order batters leading the team during last year’s Australia and South Africa series.

He has now been made captain of the shortest format team in T20 cricket, where the usual team members include Hardik Pandya, Arshdeep Singh, Mohammed Siraj, Axar Patel, etc.

Yuzvendra Chahal was benched at the 2024 T20 World Cup and failed to make it into India’s T20 squad while being one of the top bowlers during the IPL, taking 18 wickets in as many innings. Additionally, he has had good performances in Indian Premier League (IPL) seasons.

Gautam Gambhir, the new coach of India, has requested Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to appear during the forthcoming ODI series in opposition to Sri Lanka. Following India’s triumph at the World Cup, both Rohit and Kohli will retire from playing Twenty20 internationals.

It was first announced that both Rohit and Kohli would miss Sri Lankan travel because they were on holiday in the US and the UK.

Then, it was said that, as it would be Gambhir’s maiden assignment, both men had declared themselves available for the July 18 ODI part of the Sri Lanka tour. Now that the team is set, both men are members of the ODI squad.

Sanju Samson was disregarded by the Selection Committee during the ODIs, which is another unexpected decision. In December 2023, Samson’s final One-Day International (ODI) against South Africa ended with him hitting a century, which decided the match. Samson scored 108 (114), his first-ever ODI century.

ODI Squad: Rohit Sharma (c), Shubman Gill (vc), Virat Kohli, KL Rahul (WK), Rishabh Pant (wk), Shreyas Iyer, Shivam Dube, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohd. Siraj, Washington Sundar, Arshdeep Singh, Riyan Parag, Axar Patel, Khaleel Ahmed, and Harshit Rana.

T20I Squad: Suryakumar Yadav (c), Ꮪhubman Gill (vc), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rinku Singh, Riyan Parag, Rishabh Pant (wk), Sanju Samson (wk), Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Ravi Bishnoi, Arshdeep Singh, Khaleel Ahmed, and Mohammed Siraj.
