Kamalpreet Kaur has reached the final round of discuss throw in the Tokyo Olympics. Later today at 4.30 pm she will be competing in the final round for a gold medal. Thus she has made case for Team India’s second gold medal in this Olympics so far.
The 25-year-old Kaur, competing in qualification B, sent the discus to a distance of 64m in her third and final attempt to be one of the only two automatic qualifiers for the final round, the other being American Valarie Allman (66.42m).The final will held on August 2.

After reaching the final round, Kaur spoke to The Bridge, where she said that she went into depression last year during the lockdown period and even contemplated of leaving discuss throw.
“I went into depression towards the end of 2020 due to the fact that I was not able to compete in tournaments due to prevailing covid-19 restrictions. I had reached a point wherein I felt like leaving discus throw altogether and focus all my energies on cricket. In fact, I had even left training discus and started practising cricket,” she said to The Bridge.

She even revealed that she wanted to become a cricketer because she used to play the sport and enjoy it during her childhood. She added saying that she took to discuss throw only because she did not know that cricket tournaments happen for girls or women.
“I enjoyed playing cricket since childhood. I played it a lot with my cousins and children nearby in my village. Did not know cricket tournaments happen for girls, or else I would have been a cricketer. I knew district, and state-level tournaments happen in athletics because our physical education teacher in school had mentioned it,” Kamalpreet concluded saying.
