Celebrated Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain MS Dhoni has relinquished leadership duties ahead of IPL 2022. He has handed over the reins to ace all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who has been an integral part of the squad since joining the franchise in 2012.
Meanwhile, the 40-year-old former Indian captain will continue to play as a wicket-keeper batsman.
“MS Dhoni has decided to hand over the leadership of Chennai Super Kings and picked Ravindra Jadeja to lead the team. Jadeja, who has been an integral part of Chennai Super Kings since 2012, will only be the third player to lead CSK. Dhoni will continue to represent Chennai Super Kings this season and beyond,” CSK said in an official statement.
Reacting to the developments, Ravindra Jadeja admitted that he has big boots to fill. However, the 33-year-old believes the job will be easy with MS Dhoni by his side.
In a video shared by the Chennai franchise, Jadeja said:
“Feeling good but at the same time I need to fill in the big boots like Mahi bhai’s. He has already set big legacy and I need to carry forward that. I don’t need to worry too much because he is here so whenever I have a question to ask I will definitely go to him.”
He then went onto add:
“He will be my go to person. He was and he is still today so I am not worried too much. Thank you for all your wishes and keep supporting the team.”
MS Dhoni, who was the most expensive buy at the inaugural IPL auction held in February 2008, has been the skipper of Chennai Super Kings right through all the IPL seasons the franchise has participated. Under his leadership, CSK has registered a record 121 wins in 204 matches in the IPL.
With Dhoni as the captain, CSK also hoisted the IPL trophy on four occasions – 2010, 2011, 2018 and 2021. Moreover, CSK also ended up as the runners-up on five occasions – 2008, 2012, 2013, 2015 and 2019.
