Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has tipped Delhi Capitals as one of the favourites to win IPL 2022, slated to commence on March 26. He also reckoned that the Delhi franchise have enough firepower in their ranks to end the barren run in the competition.

The squad led by Rishabh Pant has made rapid progress in the last few years but have not managed to lift the elusive trophy. The 72-year-old veteran believes this might be Delhi’s year to win their maiden title.

Speaking to Sports Tai, Sunil Gavaskar said:

“Rishabh Pant’s experience as a captain last season will help him and give him a lot of confidence this time. His form in the past one and a half months for the Indian team has been incredible and that would certainly be an advantage for him.”

He then went onto add:

“The kind of team that they have chosen and the options that they have given themselves are really strong. It is quite possible that it might be their name on the trophy this time.”

“I don’t see impact players there” – Sunil Gavaskar on Punjab Kings

The cricketer-turned-commentator also analysed the Punjab Kings. Gavaskar believes they lack genuine match-winners, who can change the game. However, he also feels that this might work in Punjab’s favour as the players can play freely with no expectations on their shoulders.

“Punjab Kings have been another team who have failed to win an IPL title so far. Even this season with the kind of team that they have selected, I don’t see any impact players there. But this could work in their favour as when there are less expectations, the pressure on the team is also less. And when that happens, the players can play freely without any pressure,” Sunil Gavaskar added.

Punjab Kings will have a new captain in Mayank Agarwal at their disposal after they parted ways with KL Rahul after IPL 2021.
