Chennai Super Kings registered a thrilling 12 runs win over Lucknow Super Giants in a high-scoring thriller played at M Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai on 3 April 2023 in the IPL 2023.

After being asked to bat first, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway provided a flying start putting enough pressure on LSG bowlers right from the word go. Despite losing quick wickets, Ambati Rayudu and MS Dhoni hit quickfire knocks to help CSK post 217 for 7 in 20 overs.

Kyle Mayers showed his attacking batting putting enough pressure on CSK’s bowling. CSK spinners Moeen Ali and Mitchell Santer kept the run flow under check picking wickets also. Tushar Deshpande struggled with his rhythm, but CSK won the encounter by 12 runs.

  1. Ruturaj Gaikwad continues his brilliant form.

Ruturaj Gaikwad looked in great form putting enough pressure on Lucknow Super Giants bowlers during the first six overs. He kept the momentum going for CSK with his aggressive style of batting. Gaikwad completed his fifty off 25 balls and laid a strong foundation for a big total. He and Devon Conway put on 110 runs opening partnership in 9.1 overs. Gaikwad was dismissed for 57 off 31 deliveries with 3 fours and 4 sixes.

Gaikwad began the 2023 IPL with a brilliant 92 against Gujarat Titans in the opening match IPL 2023. His sensational form augers well for Chennai Super Kings going ahead during the season.

The crowd at Chennai wanted to see his favourite son MS Dhoni at Cheapuk in IPL after a gap of 4 years. Dhoni did not disappoint the crowd he hit two successive sixes off Purple Cap winner Mark Wood in the final over.

Dhoni also completed 5000 IPL runs during the process. He showed his class during the first match against Gujarat Titans with 1 four and 1 six off Joshua Little in the final over. It will be interesting to see if MS Dhoni comes up higher in the order and gives himself time to score big runs.

The fast bowlers struggled at Chennai in both innings. Ravi Bishnoi was the star for Lucknow Super Giants with 3 for 28 grabbing wickets of Shivam Dube, Ben Stokes, and Moeen Ali.

From the Chennai Super Kings side, impact player Tushar Deshpande struggled with his radar. Moeen Ali got the breakthrough dismissing Kyle Mayers to end 79 runs opening partnership. Mitchell Santer looked impressive giving away just 21 runs and picked the wicket of Deepak Hooda.

Moeen Ali took the wickets of KL Rahul, Krunal Pandya, and Marcus Stoinis to stall LSG’s progress. He ended with figures of 4 for 26 in 4 overs. For his match-winning spell, Moeen Ali was named the Player of the Match award.

  1. Kyle Mayers continues to hammer bowlers.

Kyle Mayers looked in cracking form right from the word go. He tore apart the CSK bowling in the first six first overs not allowing them to settle. Mayers completed his fifty off 21 deliveries to keep the momentum going for Lucknow Super Giants.

He was eventually dismissed for quickfire 53 off 22 deliveries with 8 fours and 2 sixes taking on Moeen Ali. Kyle Mayers looked in brilliant form during the opening encounter against Delhi Capitals in Lucknow.

Kyle Mayers will be a major threat to other bowlers in the competition and if he continues in the same form, then Lucknow Super Giants could reach the playoffs stage.

  1. CSK death bowling decisive factor.

Lucknow Super Giants needed 44 runs to win from the last overs with Ayush Badoni and Krishnappa Gowtham at the crease, CSK captain MS Dhoni looked tensed but CSK death bowling proved to be a decisive factor in the outcome of the match.

CSK pacers looked ordinary with their bowling. Tushar Deshpande and Rajvardhan Hangekakar did not allow Ayush Badoni and Gowtham to hit big shots. Despite bowling extra deliveries, Tushar Deshpande eventually got rid of Badoni. Chennai Super Kings eventually won the match by 12 runs and was a great victory for MS Dhoni at their home ground.
