Chennai Super Kings skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni has warned his bowlers against bowling no-balls and too many wide deliveries in the 2023 Indian Premier League matches ahead. He expressed that if the bowlers keep repeating the mistakes, they will be playing under a new captain.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s comment came in the light of poor bowling performance by the Chennai Super Kings bowlers in the first two matches of the tournament. In their first game against the Gujarat Titans, they gave away 12 extras, including four wides and two no-balls. The next game saw the Chennai bowlers bowling 13 wides and three no-balls.

Speaking after Chennai Super King’s win against the Lucknow Super Giants on Monday, April 3 at Cheapauk, the skipper said,

“It was a wicket where you could score runs but overall it got a bit lower. We’ll have to see how it plays over the next six games at home but hopefully, we can score here. It’s the fast bowling that will need to improve slightly and bowl according to the conditions. Even if it’s on the flatter side, force batters to hit over the fielders. They’ll have to bowl no no-balls and less wides. We are bowling too many extra deliveries and need to cut them out otherwise they’ll be playing under a new captain.”

I thought it would be much slower: MS Dhoni on the M. Chinnaswamy wicket

In the recently concluded match against the Lucknow Super Giants, Chennai Super Kings put on 217 runs in the first innings. Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway led the batting chart with 57 and 47 runs respectively. The others chipped in well with quickfire scores. In response, Lucknow Super Giants fell short by 12 runs. Moeen Ali took four wickets and won the Player of the Match.

“It was a terrific game, a high-scoring game. All of us were thinking how the wicket will be. We had that doubt. It was a high-scoring game. Overall I think it was a perfect first game that happened and it was a full house for the first game in 5 or 6 years since we’ve been here. I thought it would be much slower,” said MS Dhoni.
