The 2023 Indian Premier League season got underway at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Friday, March 31 with the defending champions Gujarat Titans taking on the Chennai Super Kings. The Gujarat Titans got off to a good start, as Mohammed Shami provided an early breakthrough. He sent Devon Conway’s stumps flying to draw the first blood.
Devon Conway opened the innings along with Ruturaj Gaikwad. While Ruturaj Gaikwad was going all guns blazing at one end, Conway was taking his time to get settled. However, the kiwi batter’s stay came to an end in the third over of the innings. Mohammed Shami bowled a full delivery which came into the left-hander. Conway went for a loose drive, with his front foot going nowhere. The ball sneaked through to rattle the stumps.

Luxury to have an impact player: MS Dhoni
Earlier in the match, Chennai Super Kings skipper MS Dhoni spoke about the new impact player rule in the 2023 Indian Premier League. He expressed that the rule reduces the influence of the all-rounders in the format. According to the rule, each team can bring in an impact player from the substitutes at any time of the game. MS Dhoni said at the toss ceremony,
“It’s a luxury to have (impact player). It becomes slightly easy to take the decision because you can use it at any time. Influence of allrounder has become slightly less because of the rule.”
