IPL 2024 Auction Purse Likely To Increase To ₹100 Crore – Reports

The Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises are set to have a purse of ₹100 crore for the upcoming 2024 mini-auction scheduled in December. Teams will have the freedom to retain as many players as they want, with the remaining squad heading into the auction pool.

The organizers plan to conduct the auction in late December to avoid clashing with the Christmas holidays, taking into consideration logistical issues like hotel bookings during the festive season. The exact date will be decided by the BCCI after the conclusion of the 2023 ODI World Cup.

An official from the BCCI stated, “The focus is now on the World Cup, and once all details are taken care of, we will move towards IPL.”

“We will decide the date after the World Cup, most likely in the third or fourth week of December. It will not be on Christmas Eve, and we will look for a comfortable date for all.”

The cities of Mumbai, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Kochi, and Kolkata are being considered as potential hosts for the IPL 2024 mini-auction.

The IPL 2024 mini-auction is likely to witness extravagant spending similar to its previous edition

With the success of the 2023 edition, which saw the return of the home and away format and the Impact Player rule, franchises had a record ₹95 crore to spend during the mini-auction. The increase in the purse to ₹100 crore comes as no surprise. The money for player retentions will be deducted from the purse, and franchises will enter the auction with the remaining funds based on the number and value of players released during the off-season.

The 2023 mini-auction witnessed record-breaking spending by teams, with players like Sam Curran, Ben Stokes, Harry Brook, Nicholas Pooran, and Cameron Green fetching significant sums. Sam Curran became the most expensive acquisition, attracting a bid of ₹18.5 crore from the Punjab Kings (PBKS).

In the previous years, the purse for franchises during the IPL auction has steadily increased, showing the league’s evolution and growth over time. Last year’s auction in Kochi faced some challenges, with several members participating virtually due to a postponement from the initial date.
