Chennai Super Kings suffered a 7-wicket loss to Punjab Kings in match number 49 of IPL 2024 played at M Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai on 1st May. After being asked to bat first by Sam Curran, CSK batters struggled with Rahane and Gaikwad putting on 64 runs for the opening wicket. Shivam Dube was promoted to number 3 and did not yield any results dismissed on his first ball.
Gaikwad showed intent with some attacking shots that kept some pressure. CSK captain Gaikwad was dismissed for 62. Sameer Rizvi was named as impact player replacing Rahane. Rizvi and Gaikwad put on 37 runs for the 4th wicket. Gaikwad played with intent keeping the scoreboard ticking along with Moeen Ali. Rahul Chahar bowled a superb 19th over giving away just 3 runs and kept MS Dhoni quiet. It was a disciplined bowling effort by PBKS bowlers restricting CSK to just 162 for 7 in 20 overs.
Chasing 163 runs to win, Prabhsimran Singh could not contribute and dismissed debutant Richard Gleeson. Bairstow and Rossouw kept the scoreboard ticking boundaries with ease not allowing CSK bowlers to settle. Shivam Dube struck on his first ball getting rid of Bairstow. Bairstow and Rossouw added 64 runs for the 2nd wicket. Rossouw and Shashank Singh made the batting look easy keeping the scoreboard ticking.
Rossouw was bowled by Shardul Thakur taking an inside edge onto the stumps. Rossouw and Shashank Singh added 30 runs for the 4th wicket. Sam Curran and Shashank ensured that Punjab Kings registered another comfortable win over CSK. PBKS won the match by 7 wickets with 13 balls to spare.
Chennai Super Kings struggling with injuries
Chennai Super Kings struggled with their bowling against Punjab Kings. Deepak Chahar went off the field after 2 deliveries into the innings. Matheesha Pathirana and Mahesh Theekshana went to Sri Lanka for visas for the upcoming T20 World Cup.
Tushar Deshpande and Pathirana availability for the remainder of the tournament will be doubtful. Bangladesh’s pace bowler Mustafizur Rahman will not be there due to international commitments.
CSK is currently in number 4th spot with 10 points from 10 matches. They need to win at least 3 out of 4 matches remaining to be in contention for the playoff stage. CSK would look to avenge their defeat when they face Punjab Kings in the reverse fixture at Dharmshala on 5th May.
