Former India captain MS Dhoni ended his tenure as captain of the Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL) before the commencement of the 2024 season, allowing Ruturaj Gaikwad to assume leadership responsibilities. While expected, the announcement left cricket enthusiasts reflecting on the conclusion of an era.
However, veteran India cricketer and former CSK skipper Ravichandran Ashwin believes Dhoni’s decision wasn’t abrupt. According to Ashwin, who now represents the Rajasthan Royals, Dhoni likely discussed the captaincy transition with Gaikwad the previous year. This proactive approach would have enabled Gaikwad to prepare for his new role well in advance, ensuring a smooth handover as the new season approached.
Ashwin on his YouTube channel said: “This was an inevitable decision. It had to come at some stage. I know MS Dhoni. He keeps the team at the forefront. He keeps thinking about the well-being of the team. Because of that, 2 years ago, he gave the captain’s armband to Jadeja. Now, he has given it to Ruturaj. This decision had to happen. Who and how remained the question.”
Ashwin commended Gaikwad, likening his temperament to that of Dhoni, noting their shared qualities of calmness and composure. This comparison speaks volumes about Gaikwad’s potential to lead the team effectively. As the baton passes from Dhoni to Gaikwad, there is anticipation regarding the young captain’s ability to steer the team forward amidst the high expectations associated with the franchise.

He further added: “Ruturaj wouldn’t have thought his role was only a batter until yesterday. I know MS Dhoni very well. Sitting in his room, enjoying dinner with the youngsters, he must have told Ruturaj last year, I wouldn’t be surprised if that was the case. ‘Brother, you are going to take charge. You can do all these things. I will be there, don’t worry’ is something that Dhoni might have told Ruturaj well in advance.”

However, it also signifies a new beginning for Chennai Super Kings under the leadership of Ruturaj Gaikwad.
