During the 17th edition clash between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) at Wankhade Stadium, MI opener Rohit Sharma disclosed feeling a sense of apprehension when a spectator breached security and approached him while he was setting up the field from the slips on April 1.
Reflecting on lighter moments, Rohit mentioned his camaraderie with wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant, describing Pant as someone who never fails to bring laughter. He recounted instances where he reaches out to Pant specifically to share a laugh, highlighting their bond.
Rohit Sharma said: “He (the fan) just said I am a big fan and I want a hug. I said yeah hug but please don’t do that otherwise you’ll be in big trouble. I was actually trying to set up the field, standing at slip. Suddenly, Tim David, who was standing right across at mid-off, was pointing to someone coming behind me. I was not able to understand what he was trying to say. But this guy suddenly stood up next to me and I was a little scared honestly.”
“The person who makes me laugh the most is Rishabh Pant. He is one crazy guy. I’ve been watching him since he was a kid and was disappointed for him when he missed a year and a half because of that incident (accident). And I am glad that he is back on the field. But he is quite witty and the kind of things he does behind the stumps makes you laugh.”
He concluded by saying: “He has got his way of doing things which is what I like about him. Even when he was recovering from his injury and not playing, he was still at his best at making me laugh. When I actually want to laugh, I call him, there is something he says and we all laugh about it”
Rohit Sharma achieves a historic milestone against CSK
In the recent match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Rohit achieved a milestone by becoming the first Indian to hit 500 sixes in T20 cricket. This feat places him among elite company, with West Indies legend Chris Gayle leading the tally with 1,056 sixes, followed by compatriots Kieron Pollard, Andre Russell, and Colin Munro.
Despite the pressure, Rohit has showcased remarkable form this IPL season, amassing 261 runs across six matches at an impressive average of 52.20 and a striking rate exceeding 167, punctuated by a century.
Rohit’s candid admission of feeling unnerved by the fan’s intrusion juxtaposed with his easy camaraderie with Pant offers insight into the personal dynamics amidst the competitive cricketing environment.
Furthermore, his milestone of 500 T20 sixes underscores his prowess as a batsman in the shortest format of the game, placing him among the most prolific hitters globally. As the IPL season progresses, Rohit’s consistent performance and ability to maintain composure under pressure continue to solidify his reputation as a formidable force in the cricketing world.
