IPL 2024: RR Captain Sanju Samson Fined 30% Of His Match Fees For The Dismissal Controversy

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has imposed a 30 percent fine on Rajasthan Royals (RR) captain Sanju Samson for displaying dissent towards the on-field umpire’s decision during the IPL 2024 match against Delhi Capitals (DC) on Tuesday, May 7th.

Samson was dismissed caught on the boundary for 86 runs off 46 balls during the 16th over of RR’s chase of DC’s target of 222 runs. Replays revealed that Shai Hope’s foot was incredibly close to the boundary cushioning, with slight movement observed for a brief moment as well.

However, third umpire Michael Gough did not assess multiple angles and hastily concluded that there was insufficient evidence to overturn the decision.

Samson approached the on-field umpire, engaged in a lengthy and animated discussion, and even attempted to challenge the decision through a review but was denied and instructed to leave the field.

“Mr Sanju Samson, Captain, Rajasthan Royals has been fined 30 per cent of his match fees for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during Match 56 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 against Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi on May 07, 2024,” a BCCI release said.

“Samson committed a Level 1 offence under Article 2.8 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct. He admitted to the offence and accepted the Match Referee’s sanction. For Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct, the Match Referee’s decision is final and binding,” the statement added.

Article 2.8 of the IPL Code of Conduct addresses actions such as displaying “excessive, conspicuous disappointment with an Umpire’s decision,” resulting in “an evident delay in resuming play or departing the wicket,” or even “seeking a referral to the TV Umpire.” Violations of these rules or similar breaches may result in fines.

Rajasthan Royals collapsed following the dismissal of Sanju Samson

RR were in control of the match with Samson batting, requiring 60 runs off 33 balls. However, after his dismissal at 162-4, they quickly collapsed to 194-8 in less than four overs, resulting in a loss by 20 runs.

Despite the defeat, Rajasthan remains well-placed on the points table with 16 points and occupying the second position, maintaining their chances of securing a top-two finish.
