IPL 2024: Sri Lankan Legend Named As Bowling Coach Of Mumbai Indians

The Sri Lankan bowler Lasith Malinga has been appointed as the bowling coach of Mumbai Indians for the upcoming season. Mumbai Indians reached the playoffs stage during the IPL 2023 without the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, and Jofra Archer. He will join the franchise with the likes of Kieron Pollard and other legends.

Lasith Malinga played for the Mumbai Indians franchise from 2009 to 2019 in IPL. He will join head coach Mark Boucher during the 2024 IPL season. New Zealand pace bowler Shane Bond decided to quit the bowling coach after completion of the last edition.

Malinga played with the Mumbai Indians franchise for 13 years and won seven trophies across different leagues including four IPL titles and two Champions League titles as a player. He also won the inaugural edition of the Major Cricket League title in the USA with the New York Mumbai Indians.

The appointment of Malinga will help Mumbai Indians bowlers in this edition of IPL. Mumbai Indians franchise progressed into the playoff stage losing to Gujarat Titans in qualifier 2. Rohit Sharma and Co had a great season despite the loss of key players. He also served as the bowling coach of the Rajasthan Royals franchise for the 2022 and 2023 seasons.

“It is truly an honour for me to be appointed Bowling Coach of Mumbai Indians and my journey in the OneFamily continues, following MI New York and MI Cape Town,” said Lasith Malinga, in a statement. “I am looking forward to working closely with Mark, Polly, Rohit and the rest of the team, especially the bowling unit, whose approach I loved last season, and the young MI talent that has the potential to excel, backed by the passionate MI Paltan.”

Lasith Malinga’s Performance With Mumbai Indians

Lasith Malinga had great performances with the Mumbai Indians franchise in the IPL. He picked 170 wickets from 122 matches ( 122 innings) at an economy of 7.14 runs per over including best figures of 5 for 13.

Malinga performed brilliantly as a bowler for the Mumbai Indians franchise picking four wickets in an innings six times while 5 wickets once. He proved to be a tough bowler to hit during death overs with his lethal yorkers.
