Chennai Super Kings (CSK) batsman Sameer Rizvi made an impressive entry into the IPL by hitting a six off the first ball from Gujarat Titans’ (GT) Rashid Khan. Rizvi confidently played a fuller delivery from the renowned Afghanistan spinner, sending it into the stands over square leg.
While it surprised the opposition and delighted Chennai fans, the 20-year-old explained that he had a clear plan in mind when stepping out to bat. In a video shared on the official IPL website, Sameer Rizvi expressed the following about his six:
“The kind of situation I was sent in in the 19th over, it was clear that I had to go for a big shot if the ball was on my radar. It was as it is the penultimate overs. Thankfully the first ball I got was right in the slot. I backed myself to clear the boundary and that’s how I got a six.”
The CSK bench stood up in excitement as Rizvi hit two sixes off Rashid Khan in four balls. Coach Stephen Fleming and Ravindra Jadeja were observed exchanging high-fives. Rizvi’s quick 14 runs off six deliveries provided Chennai with the momentum they required towards the end of the innings, helping them reach a total of 206/6.
Sameer Rizvi on gaining insights from CSK players
As a newcomer amidst the experienced players in the CSK team, Sameer Rizvi shared his eagerness to learn. He mentioned seeking advice from various players regarding their mindset at different stages of a game, expressing:
“Whenever I have any doubts, I keep asking different players about how they would approach a certain situation be it in the field or while batting. I ask them about their mindset before and after they walk out to bat. These are the things I want to learn.”
Chennai’s dominant 63-run victory against the Gujarat Titans showcased several positives, including Rizvi’s promising cameo, which bodes well for the franchise’s future.
