IPL 2024: The Tournament To Begin On March 22 – Reports

The 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) is set to kick off on March 22, with some uncertainty surrounding the schedule due to the upcoming general elections typically held in April-May.

The IPL has previously adjusted its plans due to elections. In 2019, the schedule was revealed in two separate parts. Additionally, in 2009, the entire tournament took place in South Africa, and in 2014, the first half was hosted by the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

As per a Jagran News report, IPL matches won’t take place in cities with scheduled voting, and alternative locations will be used. The report adds that BCCI secretary Jay Shah is actively striving to hold the entire tournament within India, avoiding the necessity of using alternative venues like the UAE or South Africa.

BCCI officials have engaged in discussions with members of the central government to address concerns about security during the tournament coinciding with elections. Reassurances have been provided to alleviate these worries.

The first edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) in 2023 took place exclusively in Mumbai, utilizing two venues- the Brabourne Stadium and the DY Patil Stadium.

Although initial discussions considered introducing the home and away concept to the WPL, it appears that the tournament will need more time before implementing this idea. However, as an improvement from the previous edition, this season’s competition will be hosted in two cities – Delhi and Bangalore.

The WPL season is anticipated to take place in the February-March timeframe, preceding the 2024 IPL. Similar to the men’s edition, the women’s competition included a mini-auction held in Mumbai on December 9, 2023.

The Mumbai Indians (MI) women’s team holds the defending champions’ title, securing victory over the Delhi Capitals (DC) women’s side in the previous year’s final.
