Indian Premier League (IPL) chairman Arun Singh Dhumal on Wednesday, February 14 confirmed that the upcoming season of the T20 league is set to take place in India, despite the general elections. He expressed that discussions will take place with the Indian government to decide on the date.
The Indian general elections are set to take place from April to May, clashing with the Indian Premier League window. There were some speculations that the tournament might be held outside of India. However, Indian Premier League chairman Arun Singh Dhumal confirmed that the tournament will take place in India. He expressed that the 2024 season will be planned keeping in mind the general elections.
“We will work with the Indian government, and agencies to make sure that the league takes place in India. We are waiting for the schedule of the general election to be announced and then we will plan accordingly…like which state will host what game at the time of election will be planned that way,” Arun Dhumal told IANS.
IPL 2024 likely to start at March end
The Indian Premier League chairman Arun Singh Dhumal further revealed the tentative timeline for the 2024 Indian Premier League season. He expressed that the tournament is likely to start from March end. A total of 74 matches are expected to be played in the tournament, with 10 teams battling for the coveted trophy.
“It (IPL) will most likely start from March end. The general elections are in April, so we will work it out with the help of the government.”
The Chennai Super Kings won the 2023 edition of the Indian Premier League. They defeated the Gujarat Titans in the finals of the tournament at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. This was their fifth title win of the league, all under the leadership of Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
