Russell’s impressive display (64* off 25) led KKR to a four-run victory over SRH in Kolkata. West Indies batting legend Brian Lara showered praise on star all-rounder Andre Russell, stating that no cricket ground can contain him.
Lara’s remarks followed Russell’s outstanding performance for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) match against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at Eden Gardens on March 23.
Despite KKR’s top-order struggles after being asked to bat first, opener Phil Salt provided a crucial half-century. However, Russell, batting at No. 8, showcased an explosive innings of 64* runs off just 25 balls, including three fours and seven sixes, enabling KKR to set a daunting target of 209 runs.
Russell also achieved a milestone, becoming the first player to hit 200 sixes for the Kolkata-based franchise and the third West Indian cricketer to reach this feat in IPL history.
Lara, in an interview with Star Sports, expressed astonishment at Russell’s performance, describing his innings as incredible. The 54-year-old also emphasized Russell’s prowess with the bat.
“It was crazy. Andre Russell, we know what he’s capable of. Russell at the end, played a terrific innings, there is no outfield big enough for Andre Russell when he’s smashing the ball,” said Lara.
Andre Russell and Harshit Rana shine as KKR secures a four-run victory over SRH
Kolkata Knight Riders amassed a total of 208 runs, with Phil Salt and Andre Russell both scoring half-centuries. Russell, before reaching his fifty, also contributed to a rapid 81-run partnership with Rinku Singh. T Natarajan was the standout bowler for SRH, finishing with impressive figures of 3/32.
Mayank Markande secured two wickets, while captain Pat Cummins took one. SRH had a strong start in the chase, with Mayank Agarwal and Impact Player Abhishek Sharma building a 60-run opening partnership.
However, Harshit Rana and Russell struck, bringing down SRH to 71 for two. Heinrich Klaasen (63) and Shahbaz Ahmed (16) then accelerated SRH’s momentum with a rapid 58-run partnership in just 16 balls.
However, in the final over, needing 13 to win, Klaasen hit a six off the first delivery, but Harshit Rana dismissed both batsmen, leading to KKR’s victory by four runs. Russell, who took two wickets in the second innings, earned the Player of the Match award for his all-round performance.
