Ex-CSK skipper MS Dhoni dropped a relatively simple catch off Andre Russell during the CSK vs. KKR match at Chepauk Stadium on April 8th. Mustafizur Rahman’s slow off-cutter induced an edge from Russell, with the ball reaching Dhoni at a comfortable pace and height.
Despite that, the veteran wicketkeeper extended his right hand but failed to hold onto the routine chance. CSK was lucky because the missed catch didn’t cause any harm since Andre Russell, who is known for hitting big shots, got out quickly after scoring just 10 runs from 10 balls.
Dhoni has been performing well as a wicketkeeper this season, particularly against spinners, despite his decreased agility due to previous knee surgery. It’s important to note that he had surgery during the off-season after playing through injury in the 2023 season, which ended with CSK winning their fifth title.
However, some Twitter fans were not pleased with Dhoni dropping a relatively easy catch that could have been costly. Below are a few responses:

“It is quite annoying that a straightforward dropped catch by Dhoni is framed by commentators as a sign of his mortality, when Dhoni has in fact dropped 9 catches since 2021 in IPL. His efficiency is not v. bad, but it is ridiculous to say it is a very rare event,” said a fan.
“Seems all the butter that these commentators apply while talking about Dhoni is stuck in his hands now. Man is literally spilling every catch,” another fan said.
“Dhoni dropped a catch and there is a complete silence amongst commentators as if nothing happened,” a fan said.
CSK delivers an exceptional bowling display to restrict KKR
The missed catch by Dhoni was a small hiccup in an otherwise outstanding bowling and fielding effort by CSK in their important match against KKR.
After experiencing consecutive defeats, CSK quickly gained momentum as Tushar Deshpande dismissed Phil Salt with the first ball of the match. Following a 56-run partnership for the second wicket between Sunil Narine and Angkrish Raghuvanshi, which was eventually ended by Ravindra Jadeja, CSK gained control of the game.
KKR’s promising start of 56/1 in the 7th over quickly deteriorated to 85/5 by the 11.5th over, largely due to Jadeja’s impressive three-wicket haul. Shreyas Iyer attempted to stabilize the innings with a 32-ball 34, but KKR managed only a modest total of 137/9 in their allotted 20 overs.
Jadeja was the standout performer with figures of 3/18, supported by excellent contributions from Deshpande (3/33) and Mustafizur Rahman (2/22). Prior to this match, KKR, along with RR, had been the only unbeaten teams in the tournament.
