Karun Nair made a powerful return to the Indian Premier League after 1077 days, scoring 89 runs off just 40 balls for Delhi Capitals. His last appearance in the tournament was in 2022 when he played for the Rajasthan Royals. This time, Delhi was chasing a target of 206 set by Mumbai Indians. Although the team fell short by 12 runs in the 19th over, Nair’s knock stood out and reminded fans of his quality.
He was picked up by Delhi Capitals at the IPL auction for ₹50 lakh, after becoming the leading run scorer in the 2024 Vijay Hazare Trophy. There, he scored 779 runs, including five centuries, at a strike rate of 124. Alongside that, he accumulated 1870 runs across formats for Vidarbha in domestic cricket.
Confidence and Preparation Behind the Performance
After the game, Karun Nair was asked about the long gap between his IPL appearances. He said, “Honestly, I had the confidence that I’ve played [IPL] before and I know how it’s going to be, and it’s nothing different that I’m going to be facing… (it wasn’t) anything new. So, in my mind, it was just about going out there and giving myself a few balls and just getting used to the speed of the game again and the atmosphere.”
He explained that his plan was to start carefully, play normal shots, and improvise only when required. “So I just told myself, ‘give yourself the time, play normal shots and then, you know, improvise when needed’. Fortunately, everything came off, and I’m happy that I batted well. But again, I would have loved that if the team had gone on to win.”
His clarity and calm mindset helped him settle quickly and play freely.
Staying Mentally Ready for Opportunities
Karun also spoke about how he prepared himself mentally even when he wasn’t part of the playing eleven.
He said, “We always knew – the few of us batters who are sitting outside who should be and have to be ready at any given time. So, mentally, I was ready, and obviously looking forward to the chance, whenever it came. I felt confident. I felt like, I’m well prepared to play in the IPL if given the opportunity.”
His words reflected the importance of staying positive and ready in professional sports, and his performance proved that he made the most of his opportunity.
