KL Rahul’s name in the marquee player list immediately attracted attention. With a base price of ₹2 crore, the wicketkeeper-batter was a prized catch for any franchise. Known for his adaptability as a top-order batter, his sharp wicketkeeping, and proven leadership, Rahul was anticipated to ignite a bidding war, and he did. KL Rahul was bought by Delhi Capitals for Rs 14 at the IPL 2025 auction being held in Jeddah (Saudi Arabia) on Saturday.
Why KL Rahul Is a Valuable Asset
The fight to secure KL Rahul was fierce. Franchises like Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore initially showed interest. However, it was Delhi Capitals that ultimately bagged him for ₹14 crore, a move many believe is a strategic masterstroke.
KL Rahul’s ability to play the anchor role or accelerate when needed makes him indispensable. He has been consistent in scoring runs, boasting 4683 IPL runs at a strike rate of 134.61, including four centuries.
Rahul’s previous stints as captain, particularly with Punjab Kings and Lucknow Super Giants, showcase his leadership abilities. Under his guidance, LSG made consecutive playoff appearances in their debut years. Rahul’s wicketkeeping skills provide Delhi Capitals with flexibility, allowing them to explore various combinations in their playing XI.
KL Rahul’s IPL Journey So Far
Rahul began his IPL career with RCB, displaying glimpses of his potential as a reliable top-order batter. At SRH, he developed into a more rounded player, contributing crucial innings in challenging scenarios. With PBKS, Rahul marked evolution as a captain and a prolific run-scorer, often carrying the team’s batting lineup. Rahul’s leadership was instrumental in LSG’s strong start in the IPL, although team dynamics reportedly soured by the end of his tenure.
In a surprising turn, Rahul was released by LSG following a disagreement with the team owner. Viral clips of a heated exchange hinted at underlying tensions, and a seventh-place finish in IPL 2024 only added to the controversy. Overall, Rahul has 7586 runs in 226 T20s which he has scored at a strike-rate of 135.85. He has six centuries and 65 fifties to his name.
Delhi Capitals’ Strategic Decision
With Rahul on board, Delhi Capitals’ top order now looks more formidable. His inclusion complements the existing retained players like Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav. Rahul is expected to take on the captaincy role, leveraging his experience to lead Delhi Capitals to their maiden IPL title.
