India’s seasoned bowler Mohammed Shami has indicated his willingness to captain a franchise in the Indian Premier League (IPL). This announcement comes as fans eagerly await updates on his recovery from ankle surgery, along with news about IPL retention and the auction.
As Shami undergoes rehabilitation, speculation about his future with the Gujarat Titans, the team he has played for since 2022, continues.
In a recent interview with Sports Today, a sister channel of India Today, Shami acknowledged that while his IPL future is uncertain, he would gladly take on a leadership role if the chance arises.
Having been a key player for the Gujarat Titans, he missed the IPL 2024 season due to his recovery following ankle surgery after the 2023 ODI World Cup.
“If one gets the opportunity, I don’t tink many will deny that role. It’s not a lot different, all you need to do is know you team, your teammates and that is gonna do you job,” Shami said.
Shami has had a notable IPL career, having played for several teams such as Kolkata Knight Riders, Punjab Kings, and Delhi Capitals before joining Gujarat Titans in 2022.
Given his extensive experience, there is speculation that the Gujarat Titans might let him go before the upcoming auction. If that occurs, it’s expected that multiple franchises will be keen to acquire the seasoned bowler for IPL 2024.
India looks forward to Shami’s return
Shami was instrumental in India’s 2023 ODI World Cup campaign, finishing as the tournament’s top wicket-taker with 24 wickets. After the World Cup, he chose to undergo ankle surgery and has since been rehabilitating at the National Cricket Academy, working under the guidance of the BCCI medical team.

Although Shami is not participating in India’s current Test series against New Zealand, fans are keen to see him return to the field soon, and he has expressed his desire to join the team in time.
His possible return to the national squad for the prestigious Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia has sparked discussions, with many hoping for his swift comeback to international cricket after his recovery.
