Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson has been fined ₹24 lakh for maintaining a slow over-rate during their IPL 2025 match against Gujarat Titans. The match ended in a heavy 58-run defeat for the Royals. This is the second instance in the season where Rajasthan Royals were penalized for a slow over-rate.
Previously, Riyan Parag, who captained the team in another match, was fined ₹12 lakh for the same reason. As per the IPL rules, other members of the playing XI, including the Impact Player, will also face a fine of either ₹6 lakh or 25% of their match fee, whichever is less. The fines were imposed as a breach of the IPL Code of Conduct.
Defeat Against Gujarat Titans
In their game at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Rajasthan Royals failed to chase the challenging target of 218 runs set by Gujarat Titans. Despite a good start, they were bowled out for 159 runs in 19.2 overs. Sanju Samson, who scored a quick 41 off 28 balls with four boundaries and two sixes, was one of the few bright spots for the Royals.
He and Riyan Parag shared a 48-run partnership, briefly raising hopes. However, Gujarat’s disciplined bowling triggered a collapse in the middle order. Sanju Samson later admitted that the team made mistakes with both bat and ball, mentioning that they gave away 15-20 extra runs during bowling and lost wickets when they needed momentum.
Focus on Improvement and Reflection
After the match, Samson highlighted areas where the team went off track. He praised Jofra Archer for taking an early wicket but noted that the team failed to stick to their plans. He reflected on whether chasing was the right decision and stressed the importance of becoming a balanced team that can win both while batting first and cchasing
The loss has led to questions about the Royals’ ability to handle pressure during big chases. As the tournament continues, the team will need to reflect on their strategy and execution to regain their form and momentum in the competition.
