Ashwani Kumar had a spectacular start to his IPL career, making an immediate impact for the Mumbai Indians. The 23-year-old fast bowler dismissed Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain Ajinkya Rahane with his very first ball.
Rahane attempted a shot but mistimed it, sending the ball to deep backward point, where Tilak Varma completed the catch despite an initial fumble. Ashwani’s impressive debut came as he replaced Satyanarayana Raju in the playing XI, proving the team’s decision right with his early breakthrough.

Born in Mohali, Ashwani Kumar has been making waves in domestic cricket. His performances in the Sher-e-Punjab T20 tournament brought him into the limelight, especially for his ability to bowl effectively in the death overs. Mumbai Indians recognized his potential and acquired him for ₹30 lakh in the IPL 2025 mega-auction.
Before this, he was part of the Punjab Kings squad in 2024 but did not get a chance to play. His domestic journey began with Punjab in the 2022 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where he played four matches, taking three wickets at an economy rate of 8.5. Additionally, he has played two First-Class and four List A matches for Punjab.

In the match against KKR, Mumbai Indians made key tactical changes, including dropping former skipper Rohit Sharma to the substitutes’ bench. Rohit was designated as an Impact Substitute and was expected to be brought in later during the chase.
