Hotstar has decided to part ways with the Indian Premier League. They have been the associate sponsors of the league since 2017, the year when Star India grabbed the telecasting rights. The deal was worth 42 crores. It is learned that normal associate sponsorships are worth 40-80 crores.
One of the senior BCCI officials was quoted saying to India Today that “There was an exit clause in the deal and Hotstar chose to exercise it.”
However, Hotstar will continue to be the digital streaming partner for the league. It is worth noting that since 2017, Hotstar has been attracting the users with their formidable subscription plans during IPL seasons. The number of viewers is increasing exponentially over the years.
The BCCI has already lost a sponsorship deal with OPPO a few weeks ago. Byju”s classes will now take over OPPO as a primary jersey sponsor from September 3. It will be interesting to see if the board would make some amendments to its sponsor related clauses.
