Veteran India speedster Jasprit Bumrah is all set to mark his return to international cricket after a prolonged absence due to injury. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)’s senior selection committee has announced the squad for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Ireland in Dublin, and Bumrah will lead the side. The series is scheduled to commence on August 18.
The star fast bowler’s last appearance for India in a T20I was back in September 2022, before an injury setback kept him out of action. Unfortunately, he was unable to participate in the 2022 T20 World Cup due to his injury. Consequently, there was much anticipation surrounding his comeback, especially with the ODI World Cup on the horizon, set to be held in India from October 5.
BCCI Secretary Jay Shah recently provided positive updates on Bumrah’s recovery, indicating that he is fit and ready to participate in the T20I series in Ireland. Jasprit Bumrah has undergone an extensive rehabilitation program at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) after undergoing surgery for his lower back stress fracture.
However, a final decision on his participation will be made only after assessing his performance in a couple of warm-up games.
Jasprit Bumrah is expected to play a key role for India
In a recent practice match at the Alur cricket ground near Bengaluru, Bumrah bowled 10 overs, split into two spells, to some of Mumbai’s young batters. Reports suggest that he has been bowling with good intensity during net sessions.
Despite these positive signs, former India batter Wasim Jaffer expressed some reservations about Bumrah’s ability to bowl with the same intensity as before. Interestingly, Bumrah has also been appointed as the captain of Team India for the Ireland tour, where a second-string team will represent the country.
With Bumrah’s return, Indian cricket fans eagerly await his performance on the field and hope that he will continue to be a potent force in the bowling attack for the upcoming series and the ODI World Cup.
The squad for the T20I series against Ireland: Jasprit Bumrah (Captain), Ruturaj Gaikwad (vice-captain), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Tilak Varma, Rinku Singh, Sanju Samson, Jitesh Sharma, Shivam Dube, Washington Sundar, Shahbaz Ahmed, Ravi Bishnoi, Prasidh Krishna, Arshdeep Singh, Mukesh Kumar, and Avesh Khan.
