A high-stakes controversy emerged during the fourth day of the unofficial Test match between India A and Australia A in Mackay, Australia. Umpire Shawn Craig suspected the India A team of ball-tampering, claiming visible scratches on the ball’s surface as evidence. This led to an on-field dispute as Craig decided to replace the ball, which India A wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan strongly opposed.
Craig’s decision to change the ball at the Great Barrier Reef Arena was met with frustration from the Indian side, especially as he attributed the damage to their actions. Caught on the stump mic, Craig firmly stated, “No more discussion, let’s play,” dismissing the players’ queries and insisting that the game proceed.
Ishan Kishan’s Heated Exchange with the Umpire
In a rare display of on-field tension, Kishan voiced his disagreement with Craig’s decision, describing it as “stupid” and questioning the logic behind it. Kishan’s remarks, however, provoked a quick reprimand from the umpire, who warned him for dissent and reminded him that such behaviour could lead to disciplinary action.
Craig clarified that the replacement of the ball was mandatory due to the scratches and implied that the Indian players were responsible. His statement, “You scratch it, we change the ball,” left little room for doubt about his suspicions of tampering, adding a layer of intensity to the already heated match atmosphere.
Potential Disciplinary Action under Cricket Australia’s Code
The incident has placed India A under scrutiny, with potential disciplinary consequences if it’s determined that the ball was tampered with deliberately. Cricket Australia’s code of conduct, under Article 2.15, explicitly penalizes any actions that alter the ball’s condition outside of those allowed under Law 41.3.2.
This rule restricts actions intended to damage or accelerate the ball’s wear and assigns responsibility to the team captain if individual players involved in the breach can’t be identified. For India A, skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad could face sanctions if it’s found that his team engaged in planned or systematic ball-tampering.
As the investigation continues, the India A team may face penalties if the match officials confirm these allegations, potentially impacting future player conduct and match regulations.
