England’s all-time leading Test wicket-taker, James Anderson, has officially registered for The Hundred draft scheduled for March 12. The 42-year-old, who retired from international cricket last July, has not played a competitive match since his farewell Test against the West Indies at Lord’s.
Despite stepping away from international cricket, Anderson has remained involved with the England team as a bowling consultant, including during the Champions Trophy. While he has never participated in The Hundred before, he is looking to extend his playing career beyond Test cricket.
Continuing His Domestic Career
Although Anderson retired from international cricket, he has committed to domestic competitions. He recently signed a one-year contract extension with Lancashire, ensuring his participation in the County Championship as well as T20 cricket. The fast bowler, who will turn 43 shortly before The Hundred begins on August 5, is now hoping to secure a spot in the competition through the upcoming draft. His availability for The Hundred comes after he went unsold in the 2024 Indian Premier League auction.
A Return to Competitive Cricket
Anderson’s last competitive appearance came in his farewell Test at Lord’s, where he claimed three wickets, bringing his remarkable career tally to 704 wickets in 188 matches. While he has been actively involved in mentoring England’s bowlers, he has not played white-ball cricket since 2019 and last featured in a T20 match over a decade ago. However, with his name in The Hundred draft, Anderson is aiming for a return to competitive cricket in the shorter format.
Anderson’s decision to enter The Hundred draft marks a significant step in his post-international career, demonstrating his enduring passion for the game. Despite retiring from Test cricket, his commitment to playing in domestic competitions highlights his determination to remain active in the sport.
If picked in the draft, it will be intriguing to see how he adapts to the fast-paced format, given his limited experience in white-ball cricket over the past decade. Regardless of the outcome, Anderson’s influence as a mentor and seasoned bowler continues to shape English cricket, reinforcing his legacy as one of the game’s greatest pacers.
