England‘s bowling mentor, James Anderson, is anticipated to miss all preparations for the first Test against Pakistan, which starts on October 7 in Multan. The 42-year-old will be participating in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship at St. Andrews in Scotland.

The legendary pacer retired after the Lord’s Test against the West Indies during the home summer, finishing with a record 704 wickets in 188 Tests. Team managing director Robert Key emphasized the importance of retaining the Lancashire bowler in the coaching staff.

Consequently, the veteran took on a mentoring role for the remaining Tests of the summer. Despite competing in the golf tournament, the Englishman is said to be in daily contact with the pace bowlers, though he won’t arrive until the second Test in Multan.

James Anderson was instrumental in England’s Test series win against Pakistan in 2022

In contrast to the upcoming series, the tourists had a seasoned bowling lineup during the 2022 tour in Pakistan, led by James Anderson, Mark Wood, and Ollie Robinson. The trio claimed 25 wickets, contributing to England’s 3-0 Test series whitewash. While Anderson has since retired, neither Wood nor Robinson is included in the current squad.

Instead, England’s bowling attack will feature Gus Atkinson, Brydon Carse, Matthew Potts, and Olly Stone. Additionally, they face another challenge ahead of the opening Test, as Ben Stokes’ participation is uncertain.

The star all-rounder has been inactive for over a month and missed the Test series against Sri Lanka. Ollie Pope, who captained England in that series, may also lead the team in the first Test against Pakistan.

Meanwhile, the hosts are under pressure after a disappointing 2-0 series defeat to Bangladesh. They haven’t won a home Test since 2021, and Shan Masood has lost all five matches since taking over as captain.
