India successfully defended a below-par score of 119 against Pakistan in the 2024 T20 World Cup, thanks to Jasprit Bumrah‘s outstanding bowling. Bowling-friendly conditions at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium aided Pakistan in restricting India to 119 runs in the first innings.

Despite starting at 81/3 by the end of the 10th over, India suffered a collapse, reaching 96/7 and eventually totaling just 119 runs, which appeared significantly below par at the halfway point. With Pakistan in a favourable position during the chase, they needed to maintain a run rate of one run per ball in the last ten overs with nine wickets in hand.

Pakistan failed in their chase due to uncertain batting and impressive bowling by India. Bumrah excelled, taking three key wickets and controlling the runs. His figures of 3/14 in four overs were pivotal in India’s thrilling six-run victory, earning him the Player of the Match accolade.

Now, let’s explore Jasprit Bumrah’s three best bowling performances against Pakistan:

#1 2/29, Asia Cup 2018 (fifty overs)

Although India and Pakistan haven’t played a series together since 2013, Jasprit Bumrah has consistently performed well against Pakistan in ICC tournaments and Asia Cup matches. In a 2018 Asia Cup game, Bumrah played a crucial role in India’s nine-wicket victory over Pakistan, after India’s loss in the 2017 Champions Trophy final.

Bumrah’s strong start in the match helped India set the pace for their win. In his initial overs, Bumrah was economical but didn’t take wickets. However, he broke a crucial partnership by dismissing Shoab Malik and later removed Shadab Khan.

Pakistan only managed 237/7. India chased down the target comfortably in less than 40 overs, with centuries from Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma. This match marked the start of Bumrah’s dominance against Pakistan.

# 2. 2/19, ODI World Cup 2023

Bumrah’s outstanding bowling performance against Pakistan in the 2023 World Cup saw him take 2 wickets for just 19 runs in seven overs at the Narendra Modi Stadium. Similar to the 2018 Asia Cup match, Bumrah didn’t take any wickets in his initial spell but had a significant influence during the middle overs.

Although he didn’t strike early, he made a crucial impact in the middle overs, dismissing Mohammad Rizwan and Shadab Khan with impressive deliveries. Pakistan’s innings crumbled, ending at 191 runs, largely due to Bumrah’s skillful bowling.

The run chase for India unfolded quite smoothly. With captain Rohit Sharma leading the charge with a fiery 86, India easily chased down the target with almost twenty overs remaining and seven wickets in hand.

#3 3/14, T20 World Cup 2024

While defending a subpar total of 119, India struggled to secure early wickets, which were crucial. Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan provided Pakistan with a solid start before Bumrah dismissed Babar in the fifth over with a well-executed away swinger.

Babar’s unsure shot was caught by Suryakumar Yadav, giving Pakistan a good start with Rizwan and Usman’s 31-run partnership until Axar Patel took a wicket. Despite this, Pakistan maintained their edge when Rohit Sharma introduced Bumrah in the 15th over.

Rizwan attempted to relieve pressure by playing a shot across the line, but ended up getting his stumps disturbed. Bumrah completed his spell by dismissing Iftikhar Ahmed, making Pakistan’s situation very challenging in the last over. Ultimately, Arshdeep Singh remained composed and delivered the decisive blow in the final over.
