Jay Shah, 35, who is the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), was declared unopposed as the new head of the International Cricket Council (ICC). Shah’s name was tapped at the deadline making him the youngest individual to take charge of the world cricket governing body.
He will take over from Greg Barclay who assumed office in 2020 but chose not to stand for a third term. Formally, Shah will take on ICC chairmanship on December 1, 2024. As such he adds new insight and leadership to this role being the youngest chairman ever in the history of ICC.
His tenure as the secretary of the BCCI has equipped him to take on the potential and difficulties of international cricket. Being the first Indian to hold the role, Shah’s election is a major turning point for Indian cricket. ICC releases a statement after Jay Shah is appointed as chairman
The ICC declared earlier this month that elections for the chairmanship would only take place if many candidates were nominated. It was established on Tuesday that Shah was the only candidate vying for the top position.
The future for who will be BCCI secretary after Jay Shah’s departure at the end of November is still ambiguous.
“Jay Shah has been elected unopposed as the next Independent Chair of the International Cricket Council (ICC). Shah, who has served as the BCCI Honorary Secretary since October 2019 and Chair of the Asian Cricket Council since January 2021, will assume this prestigious role on December 1, 2024. Shah was the sole nominee for the chairmanship after current Chair Greg Barclay decided not to seek a third term,” the ICC said in a statement.
