The International Cricket Council (ICC) has taken a firm position on Bangladesh’s request to move its Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 matches out of India. According to sources, the ICC leadership, under chairman Jay Shah, made it clear that the tournament schedule and host venues will remain unchanged.
Bangladesh had reportedly approached the ICC seeking permission to play its World Cup matches in Sri Lanka instead of India, citing concerns related to player safety and security. However, the global governing body showed little inclination to entertain any deviation from the pre-approved hosting plan.
Background to Bangladesh’s Concerns
The issue surfaced after Bangladeshi fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman was released from his Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise, an incident that triggered strong reactions from the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB).
In response, the BCB raised security concerns about touring India and even went as far as suspending IPL broadcasts in Bangladesh. These developments prompted the board to formally request a venue shift for its T20 World Cup fixtures. However, ICC sources indicated that such unilateral actions and demands were viewed unfavorably, especially given that no official advisory or security threat had been issued by Indian authorities.
ICC Issues Clear Warning to BCB
During a virtual meeting with Bangladesh officials, the ICC reportedly conveyed a strong message: Bangladesh is obligated to play its matches in India as per the tournament framework. Any refusal or failure to comply with the scheduled fixtures could lead to serious consequences, including the possibility of forfeiting points in the global event.
The ICC emphasized that international tournaments operate under binding agreements, and individual boards cannot seek last-minute changes based on political or administrative disputes. While an official statement from the ICC, BCB, or Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was awaited at the time of reporting, sources suggested that the governing body’s stance was final.
The development underlines the ICC’s intent to maintain discipline and consistency as preparations intensify for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, ensuring that sporting commitments remain unaffected by off-field tensions.
